Please read these Disclosures to understand how the Debtor Education course works and what you need to do to receive a Certificate of Debtor Education.

This course is being provided by Summit Financial Education, Inc. (Summit).

Contact Information and Hours

  • The course is offered online via the internet 24 hours a day, seven days a week. No appointment is necessary. Course progress is saved and course can be resumed at a later time.

Fees

The cost of the on-line debtor education is:

Optional Services and Products

Summit Financial Education offers the following optional services and products:

  • Rebuild Your Credit E-Book - $9.99 (free with $19.95 course level)

Payment

You will be requested to pay after you have selected the method in which you want to complete the course (reading or video), and after you have entered any coupon or attorney payment codes. You may pay via credit/debit card, e-check (ACH), an attorney payment code, or money order. Money order payments are not immediate and are applied to your account once your money order is received by Summit.

Refunds

Requests for refunds for Fees will be honored until a Certificate of Debtor Education has been issued. Not using a Certificate of Debtor Education for bankruptcy purposes is not grounds for receiving a refund.

Fee Waivers

Upon evaluation of supporting documentation (see Fee Waiver Request Form), Summit will waive the fee for obtaining a Certificate of Debtor Education for any individual whose annual household income falls below 150 percent of the poverty guidelines as last published by the United States Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) (https://aspe.hhs.gov/poverty-guidelines) for their applicable household size.

  • Fee Waivers entitle the recipient to complete the Reading-based Online course, or an equivalent discount from a higher-priced course service.
  • The income of a spouse is included in calculating income, whether a joint petition is filed, unless the spouses are separated and a joint petition is not filed.
  • If you received a Fee Waiver with Summit for the pre-filing Credit Counseling Course, you are entitled to a Fee Waiver for the Debtor Education Course. Contact Help Desk to have the Fee Waiver applied to your account.
  • During registration, you will be asked about your household size and income. If you presumptively qualify for a fee waiver, you will be notified and provided with instructions before you're asked to pay for the course.

Services Provided

The services being provided to you are:

  • You will have access to an online personal financial management instructional course approved by the Executive Office of the United States Trustees to meet the requirements of the bankruptcy law. Summit Financial Education is approved to issue certificates evidencing completion of personal financial management instructional course in compliance with the Bankruptcy Code. Approval does not endorse or assure the quality of a Provider's services.
  • Upon your completion of the course Summit Financial Education is obligated to issue your Certificate of Debtor Education promptly, barring technical difficulties, such as the unavailability of the EOUST's Certificate Generating System.
  • Certificates of Debtor Education are normally issued within 2 hours of course completion. Express Certificate Service, providing an immediate certificate following course completion, is available for $1.99.
  • You will receive a Certificate of Debtor Education only if you complete the debtor education course.
  • Your Certificate of Debtor Education will be available to you from your online account that you create during registration.
  • Your Certificate of Debtor Education will be emailed to you at the email address you provide during registration.
  • Your Certificate of Debtor Education will be emailed to your attorney at the email address you provide during registration.

Services Not Provided

The following are NOT the responsibility of Summit Financial Education and are NOT part of the services being provided to you:

  • Ensuring that the emailed Certificate of Debtor Education reaches you. We have no control over whether the email address you provide is correct or whether a junk mail filter blocks our email. Please get your Certificate from your online account on our website.
  • Ensuring that the emailed Certificate of Debtor Education reaches your attorney. We have no control over whether the email address you provide is correct or whether a junk mail filter blocks our email. Please call your attorney to make sure they have received your Certificate.
  • Ensuring that your Certificate of Debtor Education is filed with your bankruptcy court on time. Please contact your attorney's office to make sure that this is done.

Non-English Language Support

For people with limited English proficiency Summit will provide assistance in identifying an EOUST-approved provider that can assist in the appropriate language.

About the Course

  • The course was designed by our President, Richard H. Serlin. An MBA from the top ranked University of Michigan, Richard taught personal finance at the University of Arizona for over 10 years. All other instructors are Certified Credit Counselors.
  • Any questions or comments will be answered within maximum one business day.

Privacy of Your Information

With the exceptions defined in the "Sharing Information with the United States Trustee" section below, none of your personal or financial information will ever be shared with a third party without your explicit consent. The course does not contain any commercial advertising, and Summit Financial Education does not sell information about the debtor to any third party without the debtor's permission.

Sharing Information with the United States Trustee

Summit Financial Education might disclose debtor information to the United States Trustee in connection with the United States Trustee's oversight of Summit Financial Education, or during the investigation of complaints, during on-site visits, or during quality-of-service reviews.

Referral Fees

Neither Summit Financial Education, nor any of its owners or officers pays or receives fees or other consideration for the referral of debtor students to Summit Financial Education's online course. Such paid referrals are prohibited.

Service Accreditation

The United States Trustee has reviewed only Summit Financial Education's credit counseling and personal financial management instructional courses. The United States Trustee has not reviewed nor approved any other services that Summit Financial Education provides to debtors.
